Traditional Lyon framing in a light-filled Bedfordshire kitchen
Kitchen | Shaker"From the very first conversation, we knew we were in expert hands. The Charles Yorke team listened, interpreted and elevated our ideas into something far beyond what we had imagined. Every detail, from the bespoke mantel around our AGA to the stunning island and media cabinetry, has been crafted with such care and precision. The result is a space that feels completely personal to us, and one we are proud to share with family and friends every single day."
Traditional craftsmanship with contemporary elegance
The Lyon Shaker kitchen by Charles Yorke is a refined interpretation of classic framed cabinetry, balancing traditional craftsmanship with a calm, contemporary elegance. Defined by its understated proportions and beautifully detailed joinery, the design creates a space that feels both timeless and effortlessly liveable. Painted in a soft neutral palette, the cabinetry introduces warmth and architectural structure without overpowering the room. Delicately framed doors and subtle moulding details give the kitchen depth and rhythm, while the expansive central island becomes a natural focal point.
AGA Kitchen with Bespoke Mantel & Architectural Detailing
Centring the room is a traditional black AGA paired with a companion unit, set within a bespoke mantel arrangement that reinforces the kitchen’s classic heritage. The combination provides both visual presence and practical flexibility, blending the timeless appeal of cast-iron cooking with the convenience of additional integrated functionality. Positioned against crisp stone surfaces and surrounded by finely detailed cabinetry, the range becomes a striking architectural feature within the space.
Large glazed windows flood the room with natural light, enhancing the soft tones of the cabinetry and complementing the pale oak flooring beneath. Integrated appliances, aged brass hardware and layered lighting complete the scheme with a sense of understated luxury and cohesion.
The result is a kitchen that feels elegant yet welcoming, a space rooted in craftsmanship, designed for modern living, and unmistakably characteristic of Charles Yorke’s bespoke approach.

The Art of the Bespoke Kitchen Island
The central island forms the architectural heart of the Lyon Shaker kitchen by Charles Yorke, combining generous proportions with finely considered detailing that elevates its classic framed construction.
Finished in a warm neutral painted tone, the island is defined by elegant shaker-style panel work with carefully balanced proportions and crisp shadow lines that give the cabinetry depth and refinement. The expansive stone worktop introduces a sense of lightness and durability, while softly eased edges maintain the kitchen’s understated, timeless character.
Designed to function as both a practical workspace and a social hub, the island integrates a flush-mounted gas hob, prep sink and discreetly housed appliances within the cabinetry, preserving clean sightlines throughout the open-plan space. Open shelving at one end adds a softer, more informal element, breaking up the symmetry and creating an opportunity for display and everyday storage.
Particularly distinctive is the island’s bespoke skirting detail, which draws inspiration from traditional freestanding furniture rather than conventional fitted cabinetry. The shaped plinth introduces a subtle furniture-like quality, grounding the island elegantly within the room while adding craftsmanship and visual weight at floor level. This detailing softens the scale of the large central piece and reinforces the bespoke nature of the design.
Aged brass hardware completes the composition, introducing warmth and a subtle contrast against the painted finish, while the island’s generous overhang provides comfortable seating and encourages relaxed interaction within the space. The result is an island that feels both highly functional and deeply architectural — carefully resolved from every angle.

Elegant Media Cabinetry with Furniture-Led Detailing
Extending beyond the kitchen itself, the Lyon Shaker scheme by Charles Yorke continues into the adjoining living and dining space through a beautifully resolved wall of bespoke cabinetry that combines storage, display and architectural balance.
Designed as a fully integrated furniture piece, the cabinetry spans the full width of the room, creating a strong sense of symmetry and permanence. Framed shaker doors with delicately beaded with finely proportioned frame rails, maintaining consistency with the kitchen while introducing a softer, more furniture-led aesthetic suited to the open-plan environment.
The central media section is framed in natural oak, adding warmth and material contrast against the painted cabinetry. Open shelving above the television introduces a relaxed display element, while glazed upper cabinets with subtle glazing bars lighten the composition and provide an elegant space for decorative objects and glassware.
Below, a combination of deep drawers and concealed cupboards offers generous practical storage, carefully integrated to preserve the calm visual rhythm of the elevation. Solid oak surfaces running beneath the cabinetry add refinement and durability, while aged brass handles introduce warmth and continuity with the wider scheme.
Particularly notable is the thoughtfully integrated dog bed niche beneath the media unit, which softens the formality of the cabinetry and reinforces the room’s liveable, family-oriented character. The oak-lined recess transforms a functional requirement into a deliberate design feature, seamlessly incorporated into the overall composition.

A Calm Workspace Within the Open-Plan Home
Positioned beside the full-height glazing, the bespoke writing desk creates a calm and intimate workspace within the open-plan living environment. Designed as a seamless continuation of the surrounding cabinetry, the desk introduces a quieter, more personal moment within the larger architectural scheme.
Finished in the same soft painted tone as the main furniture, the desk is deliberately understated in form, allowing the natural light and garden views beyond to become part of the experience of the space. Slim framed detailing and discreet brass hardware maintain consistency with the wider Lyon Shaker collection, while the elegant proportions give the piece a refined, furniture-like quality.
Location
Set within the historic Bedfordshire countryside, the project draws influence from the heritage and landscape of Woburn Abbey — the long-standing seat of the Dukes of Bedford.
Originally founded as a 12th-century Cistercian abbey before becoming one of England’s great country estates, Woburn Abbey has shaped the character of the surrounding landscape through its parkland, woodland and enduring architectural heritage. This sense of timeless craftsmanship and understated elegance is reflected in the Lyon Shaker kitchen by Charles Yorke, where classic framed cabinetry and natural materials create a scheme that feels both refined and deeply connected to its setting.
