Refined contemporary kitchen design in East Sussex
Kitchen | Contemporary
“Charles Yorke has created a kitchen that feels perfectly suited to the way we live. We love the curved seating around the island - it’s where everyone naturally gathers. The thoughtful details and beautiful finishes make the space a pleasure to use every day.”
A Study in Curves & Contrast
This Rio-Valencia kitchen by Charles Yorke brings together clean contemporary lines, warm tonal finishes and sculptural curves to create an inviting space for cooking, dining and entertaining. The restrained detailing allows the proportions and contrasting surfaces to take centre stage, balancing architectural simplicity with the character of bespoke furniture. Full-height cabinetry and the central island introduce a warm, subtly grained finish, complemented by pale perimeter cabinetry and crisp white worktops. Dark reflective splashbacks add depth, while neatly integrated appliances and discreet storage maintain the kitchen’s calm, uncluttered appearance.
Soft Curves & Refined Detail
At the heart of the design, the island flows into a sweeping curved banquette, embracing a circular pedestal table. Upholstered seating softens the composition and creates an intimate setting for everyday dining, connecting the practical workspace with a relaxed place to gather. An integrated wine cooler adds convenience for entertaining. Above, a shaped ceiling feature echoes the curves of the furniture below, bringing cohesion to the room and incorporating lighting and extraction. Generous windows and garden-facing glazing fill the interior with natural light, enhancing the soft neutral palette and the warmth of the stone flooring. The result is a thoughtfully composed kitchen where bespoke craftsmanship and flowing forms create a space that feels both distinctive and comfortable.

Sculptural Harmony
The island and ceiling detail share a flowing silhouette, creating a striking architectural connection at the heart of this Rio-Valencia kitchen. Above, the sculpted ceiling follows the island’s elongated form before opening into a generous circular feature, echoing the curved seating below. Recessed lighting and neatly integrated extraction preserve its clean, uninterrupted profile.
The island’s white worktop traces the sweeping curve of the banquette, contrasting with the warm, subtly grained cabinetry. Enclosing upholstered seating and a circular pedestal table, this bespoke composition brings preparation, cooking and relaxed dining together within one beautifully considered design.

The Devil’s in the Detail
Behind the clean lines of this Rio-Valencia kitchen lies a carefully considered approach to everyday living. A concealed pop-up television rises from within the island, providing viewing from the curved dining area before retracting discreetly beneath a matching worktop panel.
Precision-machined recessed handles introduce a subtle detail to the tall cabinetry, providing a comfortable grip while preserving the uninterrupted appearance of the timber fronts. Along the window elevation, the Rio handle detail is machined horizontally into the drawer fronts, creating an elegant linear rhythm that emphasises the length of the cabinetry.
Combined with push-to-open mechanisms elsewhere, these considered touches maintain the kitchen’s restrained aesthetic, allowing the materials, proportions and craftsmanship to remain the focus.

Location and Heritage
Set in Heathfield, East Sussex, this project sits within a landscape shaped by the rolling countryside of the High Weald and the character of its historic market towns and villages. The area’s blend of rural charm, traditional architecture and established English homes provides a fitting setting for a kitchen that balances contemporary design with a warm, welcoming character.
The Rio-Valencia kitchen brings this balance to life through oak finishes, contemporary cabinetry and a sculptural island that combines cooking, dining and socialising. Flowing curves, carefully integrated appliances and considered detailing create a space that feels distinctly modern while retaining a sense of warmth and permanence, reflecting a more contemporary approach to bespoke kitchen design in East Sussex.

Project Specifications
The Rio-Valencia collection combines clean contemporary styling with the precision of bespoke furniture making. Flat-fronted cabinetry and discreet machined handle details create a refined, uncluttered appearance, softened by warm timber grain and sweeping curves. In this kitchen, contrasting pale cabinetry and a sculptural island with integrated banquette seating bring together practical storage, relaxed dining and architectural balance.
The cabinetry is crafted from solid and veneered European oak, combined with carefully selected furniture-grade substrates for strength, stability and precision. A grey stain enhances the oak’s natural grain, introducing warmth and texture, while contrasting off-white cabinetry brings lightness and balance to the scheme. Clean-lined doors, precision-machined handle details and bespoke curved forms complete the contemporary design.
European oak is finished with a subtle grey stain and matt lacquer, softening its warm tones while allowing the natural grain to remain visible. The painted cabinetry is finished in Paint & Paper Library Cotton II with a 90% gloss finish, introducing a soft off-white contrast and a reflective quality that enhances the sense of light and space.
The worktops are crafted from 50mm Corian in Venaro White, bringing a soft, subtly veined surface to the scheme. The island worktop follows the sweeping curve of the integrated banquette, complemented by a matching circular tabletop that connects the cooking and dining areas. Black glass splashbacks introduce depth and reflection, providing a striking contrast to the pale surfaces and off-white cabinetry.
Miele ovens and a built-in coffee machine sit neatly within the full-height cabinetry, alongside a Miele MasterCool fridge and freezer arranged side by side. An island hob and ceiling-integrated extractor maintain the kitchen’s clean architectural lines, while a wine cooler provides convenient storage for entertaining. A concealed pop-up television rises from the island for viewing from the curved banquette seating.
Precision-machined recessed handles, horizontal Rio handle detailing and push-to-open mechanisms combine practical access with a restrained contemporary finish.
