Meet the artist
05/2009

Behind the scenes at Charles Yorke is a team of skilled cabinet makers, designers and fitters who work together to create furniture that fits perfectly into our customers’ homes and lifestyles. Working alongside our in-house team of talented craftsmen is Nick Hobbs, an independent artist who specialises in creating trompe l’oeil and murals for customers all over the UK.
In addition to his stunning pictorial pieces, Nick’s intuitive understanding of colour and texture mean he can create beautiful hand-painted finishes for our furniture. Whether we want to re-create the effect of strong paint colours softened by the Mediterranean sun or to match a heritage shade seen in a country house, we rely on Nick to work his magic applying layers of paint until he has achieved exactly the right look.
Nick takes inspiration for his pictorial work from many sources. One of his recent projects now creates an unexpected vista to welcome visitors to our showroom. The mural illustrates the fable of St Tropes the patron saint of St Tropez using an intricate trompe l’oeil tile effect that gives depth and texture.
He says: “Although I am primarily a mural artist I enjoy working with Charles Yorke to create hand-painted finishes for kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms. Working directly with the client enables me to get exactly the right colour and finish to match in perfectly with fabrics, work surfaces and flooring. Because the majority of my work is done on site it’s lovely to be able to see the whole project come together and to put the finishing touches to a room.”
